OLIVIA WAITED A GOOD hour after her aunt and uncle retired for the night before she sprang out of bed, flipping off the light blanket and pushing her feet into her slippers. She kept the light of her lamp turned low, hoping it would keep Powell away from the house. Who knew how long that ploy would work?
She took her night-wrapper off her bed and slipped into it. She collected the few pieces of Maâs jewelry and slipped it inside the small pocket of her wrapper, then she picked up her fatherâs painting before sneaking out of the room. The hallwayâs floor creaked in certain areas, so Olivia tried her best not to step on those spots.
She came to Natalieâs old room and quietly opened the door. She prayed Flynn wasnât asleep. Of course, she didnât think he would be since he professed to wanting to protect her and her aunt and uncle.
Cautiously, she entered the room and closed the door behind her. Immediately, she felt a different atmosphere in the room. She sensed someone was in the shadows, and very nearby.
Suddenly, a manâs body pressed against her, pushing her up against the door. She gasped, and brought up a hand to push against his bare shoulders... bare? She quickly slid her hand down to his waist. Bandaged. A relieved sigh escaped her.
âFlynn,â she whispered. âItâs me.â
âI know,â he said softly as he buried his face in her neck.
Pleasurable chills ran over her and she trembled with delight. She needed to stop these insane feelings from creeping up on her. The last time she felt this was before her father caught her and Flynn in an intimate kiss.
âThen if you know itâs me, why are you still up against me?â she whispered.
His chest shook with what she figured was a silent laugh. For a moment, she thought he would pull away, but he didnât.
âWould you believe me if I told you that I liked doing this?â
She frowned, wondering what he was talking about. Could he be delirious from the pain? Maybe the doctor had given him some medicine that made him talk nonsense. That was the only thing that made sense. After all, he had not wanted to act like her husband, even on their wedding night.
âFlynn, please...â She pressed on his shoulder again, but he didnât budge an inch.
âOlivia,â he whispered, âdonât you want to see what itâs like after all this time? Arenât you the least bit curious?â
His warm breath on her neck caused havoc to spin through her mind, confusing her greatly. âWhat are you referring to? What should I be curious about?â
âThis...â
He lifted his head and brushed his mouth across hers. Her breath stalled in her chest, and her body stiffened from a mixture of fear and interest. This was wrong. Yet, they were married, and so it wasnât a sin. And this time, kissing him wouldnât ruin her name again as her father had worried would happen if she and Flynn didnât exchange wedding vows.
As he continued to leave small kisses over her lips, her body gradually relaxed.
